Bricknell Byline

Since September this year, we have ran a school newspaper club. This club has gathered some of the most passionate writers in Years 5 and 6 and challenged them to report on areas of school life and bring these to the school community through their own words and experiences. Within this first edition you will find a collection of their first pieces, which range in terms of subject from: school trips, how we do play [...]

World Book Day 2025

World Book Day 2025 was celebrated in style today! Imagine, one minute you're speaking to a pirate and the next you're comparing wands with a wizard. The whole school was buzzing with excitement! During our whole school assembly, the staff shared their amazing costumes with the children. Phonic sounds, the cast of The Wizard of Oz and characters from Harry Potter filled the stage. EYFS were even taken over by aliens wearing underpants! It [...]

Promoting reading across the school

Supporting reading across the school is essential for fostering a lifelong love of learning and ensuring that all pupils develop strong literacy skills. Schools strive to create a reading-rich environment where children are surrounded by books, stories, and language in a way that sparks curiosity and enthusiasm. This means not only ensuring access to a diverse range of texts—covering different genres, cultures, and reading abilities—but also embedding reading into daily routines. Teachers provide regular [...]

Tonie Boxes

We use Tonieboxes as an interactive and engaging tool to support literacy and storytelling for younger pupils, particularly in early years and Key Stage 1. These screen-free audio devices allow children to independently listen to stories, songs, and educational content by simply placing a character-shaped Tonie on the box. Teachers often use Tonieboxes during storytime, in reading corners, or as part of a listening station to promote auditory learning and comprehension skills. [...]

Promoting reading across the school

At Bricknell Primary School, we promote a love of reading throughout the entire school, providing dedicated and creative reading areas for every key stage. In EYFS, we have cosy reading dens where our youngest learners can enjoy books in a comfortable, inviting environment. In Key Stage 1, children have access to a reading canopy area, complete with a wide selection of books, story baskets filled with props, and story stones that help inspire them [...]

KS1: Reading canopy area

In Key Stage 1, we’ve created a special reading canopy area designed to make reading a magical experience for the children. Underneath this cosy and inviting canopy, children can dive into a variety of wonderful books, each carefully chosen to engage and inspire young readers. The area also includes story baskets filled with props and objects related to the stories, allowing children to interact with the stories in a hands-on way. Additionally, we have [...]

James Reckitt Book Awards

Each year, our school proudly takes part in the James Reckitt Children’s Book Awards, organised by the Hull Library Service. These exciting awards are a fantastic opportunity for children to engage with literature in a fun and interactive way, helping to inspire a lifelong love of reading. The awards are split into two categories: the James Reckitt Children’s Picture Book Award for EYFS and Key Stage 1 pupils, and the James Reckitt Children’s Book [...]

Celebrating reading

At our school, we believe in celebrating reading every day and encouraging a love of books from the earliest years. We are proud to reward children who meet our standard of reading at least five times per week, with exciting opportunities. If your child is in EYFS or Key Stage 1, they can enter a draw to take home our Tonie boxes, which bring stories to life with fun audio experiences. For Key Stage 2 [...]

Our school library

Our school library has recently undergone a wonderful renovation and is now an exciting space for all our children to enjoy. We’ve added a fantastic reading treehouse where children can climb up, relax, and dive into their favourite books, as well as cosy seating areas throughout the library. Whether they want to sit on a beanbag, find a quiet corner, or explore the treehouse, there are plenty of comfortable spots for every child to [...]
