D&T – Structures
In Structures units, children develop essential technical knowledge used by designers and engineers to create strong and stable structures. They learn about the importance of stability and strength in construction, exploring how different shapes, such as triangles and arches, can reinforce a structure’s durability. Pupils also experiment with various materials to understand their properties and discover which are best suited for different building purposes.
Throughout these lessons, children apply a range of strengthening and joining techniques, such as folding, layering, and bracing, to enhance the resilience of their own designs. They put their skills into practice by planning, building, and testing models, such as bridges, towers, or shelters, to see how well they stand up to different forces. This hands-on approach not only deepens their understanding of structural engineering but also encourages creativity and problem-solving, equipping them with valuable skills for future design challenges.
