James Reckitt Book Awards
Each year, our school proudly takes part in the James Reckitt Children’s Book Awards, organised by the Hull Library Service. These exciting awards are a fantastic opportunity for children to engage with literature in a fun and interactive way, helping to inspire a lifelong love of reading. The awards are split into two categories: the James Reckitt Children’s Picture Book Award for EYFS and Key Stage 1 pupils, and the James Reckitt Children’s Book Award for Year 6 pupils.
For the James Reckitt Children’s Picture Book Award, our EYFS and Key Stage 1 children read five different stories over the course of a week. After enjoying each book, the children are encouraged to vote for their favourite. Once all the votes are collected, they are sent off to be counted as part of the wider competition. It’s a wonderful way for our youngest readers to actively engage with books and express their opinions about the stories they love most.
The James Reckitt Children’s Book Award is aimed at Year 6 pupils who choose to take part. Over several weeks, the children read five selected books and complete a reading journal to record their thoughts. They then vote for their favourite book, and the excitement builds as they are invited to attend The Big Malarkey festival at East Park. At the festival, the children have the unique opportunity to participate in workshops with the authors of the books they’ve read, and they eagerly await the announcement of the winning book. It’s a fantastic experience that gives pupils a deeper connection to reading and the world of authors and stories.
This initiative is an incredible way for pupils of all ages to develop a love of reading while being part of a wider community of young readers across Hull. We encourage all our pupils to get involved and enjoy the magic of books through this special programme!
