Year 3: Create maps and plan routes

Overall Objective: To develop skills in map reading and navigation by creating maps and planning routes within the local area, using the 8 points of the compass (north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest). Pupils will gain practical experience in using maps and compass directions to enhance their geographical understanding of direction and location.

Learning Outcome: Pupils will be able to successfully use a map and compass to follow a planned route in their local area. They will demonstrate the ability to accurately interpret map symbols and compass points to navigate from one location to another. By the end of the lesson, they will be able to plan a route using directional language and understand how to apply compass points in real-world settings.
