Year 6: Ordnance Survey (OS) maps

Overall Objective: To develop the ability to read and interpret Ordnance Survey (OS) maps by understanding the symbols used and mastering the use of six-figure grid references to locate precise points on the map. Pupils will also learn how to read and calculate distances using the scale provided on the map, enabling them to accurately measure the distance between different locations.

Learning Outcome: Pupils will be able to plan and follow a route using OS map symbols, six-figure grid references, and map scale. By the end of the lesson, they will demonstrate an understanding of how to interpret symbols to identify landmarks, use grid references to pinpoint locations, and calculate distances effectively using the scale on the map. These skills will enhance their navigation abilities and deepen their understanding of how maps represent the real world.
