Year 6 Science
Year 6 students have been exploring how light travels in straight lines and how it can be reflected, absorbed, or blocked by different materials. To put their learning into action, they got hands-on by creating their own periscopes and shadow puppets.
Building periscopes was a fun and engaging way for the students to see how light reflects off mirrors, allowing them to look around corners and over obstacles. They carefully positioned the mirrors inside their periscopes to make sure the light traveled just the right way to see an object that wasn’t directly in front of them. It was exciting to discover how periscopes work, just like the ones used in submarines!
The students also made shadow puppets to demonstrate how light travels and how shadows are formed. They experimented with different shapes and distances from the light source, observing how the size and sharpness of the shadows changed. This hands-on activity helped them understand that shadows appear when an object blocks the path of light, making it clear that light always travels in a straight line.
